Thinking about light beer today.

This weekend, at some point, we’re going to travel. Whether it’s in our minds, to another state or across town, we’re gonna go somewhere. We’ll hang out with friends or family, some of them for the first time in a long while. Or we’ll make it to the what’s-become-regular standing video chat on Sunday afternoon.

And we’ll pound some damn beer while we do it. Especially on Sunday, because many of us are off work Monday. (Remember the fallen on Memorial Day, btw.)

For those journeys of the mind or body, to hang with friends and family, I suggest the Alliance Lager. It’s clear, clean, crisp, and in the words of B+F/W’s creative director, Aaron Russell:

“That lager is damn fine. And I could pound a couple dozen.”

Yessir, it is. Alliance’s head brewer, Adam Ingle, texted me last weekend about the lager, mostly because he knows I geek out about that stuff. A lager is a hard beer to land. It doesn’t let you hide flaws. And it needs to be fermented colder than ales, presenting another layer of brewing difficulty than your standard ales that use a yeast that can go higher in temp. But I like to suspect that Adam also knew he had something special on his hands. When a lager is done well – and this one is – it’s a thing of beauty.

“We were shooting for a nice clone of a macro lager,” he said, “since we usually are sitting around drinking Busch and beers of that ilk.”

This could also be a toe-dip into a rotating lager program, he said.

“Helles, Czech pils, dortmunder … we could do those really well,” he said. He added that this lager is basically an American lager, though it’s not quite up to technical style guidelines for the beer. “If we really want to throw a lot of corn at it, we can try an Mexican style lager. Or rice, for a super dry Japanese lager.”

Eh. What the hell are guidelines anyway? Pfft. This is a solid, eminently poundable beer. It’s perfect for, say, an afternoon of responsible social distancing and slamming beer. Get it while you can, though. Sales of the lager are hot.

“People have come by to get the lager and immediately come back and buy six more,” Adam said.

Indeed, I was one of those people. I picked up three crowlers on Sunday, had one with a buddy in his backyard, then drove right back to Alliance to buy three more. Totally worth it. And however you travel, whether it’s near or far, this beer is a good companion for the ride.
